International Scholars Program: Final Reflection

My journey through the International Scholars Program (ISP) at the University of Florida has been instrumental in shaping my ability to think critically about global and intercultural issues while fostering effective communication across diverse cultures. The program, enriched with coursework and opportunities that delve into cultural studies, societal issues, and global affairs, has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding global issues. The interdisciplinary nature of ISP coursework has allowed me to explore the interconnectedness of economic, political, and social systems on a global scale.

Engaging in campus life events promoted by ISP, including cultural festivals, guest seminars, and discussions, has further expanded my perspectives. I've had the opportunity to attend and/or perform in over ten cultural shows within the past four years, such as Chinese New Year, Seollal, Tết, and Diwali, as well as modeling traditional clothing. Participating in these campus life events revived my passion for dancing and having a stage presence. Starting from simply attending cultural festivals as a freshman to performing on stage as a sophomore was an evolution I did not expect. These events facilitated interactions with a diverse student body, offering firsthand experiences of diverse cultures and fostering a sense of cultural empathy. My international experience, whether through ISP-sponsored programs or language learning opportunities, has been a cornerstone of my intercultural development. Learning Mandarin Chinese, a key component of my international experience, has not only provided a practical tool for communication but has also deepened my appreciation for the nuances embedded in various linguistic expressions.

Personal Growth and Values

Through ISP, I've learned to critically analyze social issues and the importance of intersectionality, understanding experiences past my own while evolving my identity as an Asian American. One example is attending a diversity conference by Students Taking Action Against Racism (STAAR) where guest speakers discussed how to handle discrimination in the workforce, how to be an advocate, and the importance of representation. This interdisciplinary approach has equipped me with the tools to navigate complex issues with a nuanced perspective, considering the multifaceted nature of societal challenges and potential solutions.

Due to these experiences, one of my core values is authenticity. Being my authentic self encompasses an immense pride for my identity and culture that should not be hidden. Authenticity is my guiding principle, shaping my interactions with others and influencing my personal choices. I believe in the power of genuine connections, valuing sincerity and transparency in all relationships. Embracing authenticity allows me to express my true self, fostering a sense of trust and understanding in both professional and personal spheres.

ISP also served as a catalyst in guiding me towards my passion for health equity, with key coursework playing a pivotal role in shaping my understanding of the complex issues surrounding public health. Notably, the classes Global Public Health, Race and Racism, and Social Determinants of Health within the program were instrumental in this transformative journey. These course provided a comprehensive overview of health challenges on a global scale whether they be medical or non-medical. By examining public health issues through an international lens, I gained insights into the disparities that exist across different regions and cultures. Furthermore, these courses critically analyzed how systemic racism contributes to health disparities, emphasizing the need for an anti-racist approach in public health initiatives. They highlighted the social determinants of health within marginalized communities and illuminated the importance of addressing systemic inequalities to achieve equitable health outcomes.

This exposure to diverse perspectives and the emphasis on global awareness broadened my understanding of health equity as a multifaceted challenge. It encouraged me to critically evaluate the root causes of disparities and inspired a commitment to addressing social determinants to promote equitable health outcomes. Informed by the insights gained through ISP, I am driven to contribute to the field of public health, particularly focusing on initiatives that address systemic inequalities and promote health equity. The program's coursework has not only sparked a passion for this critical area but has also equipped me with the analytical tools and interdisciplinary understanding needed to make meaningful contributions in the pursuit of health equity.

Expanding my Skillset

Intellectually, the program's interdisciplinary approach has broadened my perspectives on global issues. Engaging in coursework that spans across various disciplines has equipped me with a holistic understanding of the interconnected nature of the world. One of my favorite courses within ISP was Global Gender Issues where we analyzed the performance of gender identity among various cultures related to autonomy, societal roles, structural violence, and more. The combination of women's studies, economics, anthropology, and biology into one course gave me a thorough understanding of gender, allowing me to create a more inclusive space as a future Physician Assistant. ISP has enhanced my critical thinking abilities and enabled me to approach complex problems with a more nuanced and informed mindset.

Looking ahead, my UF and ISP global learning experience significantly connects to post-graduation in both personal and professional aspects. Academically, the knowledge gained from the program informs my understanding of global trends and influences my future academic pursuits. I aim to pursue a Master's in Public Health concentrating in epidemiology. ISP contributes to this goal through networking with fellow students, faculty, and professionals from diverse backgrounds. Establishing connections within a global community can offer valuable insights, collaborative opportunities, and diverse perspectives in the field of epidemiology. Personally, the friendships and cultural insights gained during this journey have enriched my worldview, contributing to a more informed and empathetic approach to global affairs. I will forever cherish the memories and relationships made through student organizations and campus events.

Summary

My experiences with ISP at the University of Florida have been transformative, fostering critical thinking skills, enhancing my understanding of global and intercultural issues, and honing my ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries. The program has provided a holistic education that extends beyond the classroom, preparing me to navigate the complexities of our interconnected world with cultural competence and a global mindset.
