Mid-Autumn Festival

Stepping onto the stage for the Chinese American Student Association's Mid-Autumn Festival was an exhilarating experience I'll never forget. As a participant in the traditional Chinese lion dancing performance, I found myself immersed in a centuries-old art form that seamlessly blended athleticism, symbolism, and cultural pride. The vibrant colors of the lion costume and the rhythmic beats of the accompanying drum music transported me into a world steeped in tradition. Maneuvering the lion with precision alongside my fellow dancers, we brought to life the rich cultural heritage of Chinese festivities. The energy of the crowd, the resounding drumbeats, and the synchronized movements created a mesmerizing spectacle that not only showcased the beauty of Chinese tradition, but also fostered a sense of unity and shared celebration within the diverse community of CASA. The intention behind the movements is connected to their name and meaning, such as "crane" and "dragon". Performing in the Mid-Autumn Festival's lion dance was not just an act; it was a profound connection to the cultural roots that make our campus a tapestry of shared experiences and appreciation.

Attending the event unveiled the complexities of colorism, as discussions and presentations delved into the historical, cultural, and societal roots that contribute to this phenomenon. The atmosphere was one of shared reflection and empathy, fostering an environment for open dialogue about the impact of colorism on personal identities. Later, as a host for the event, I had the privilege of facilitating conversations that challenged preconceptions and encouraged self-awareness. Through engaging workshops and thought-provoking presentations, we collectively navigated the intricacies of colorism, aiming to dismantle biases and promote inclusivity. The Colorism in Asia event served as a powerful testament to aKDPhi's commitment to cultural education, creating a space where we could collectively address sensitive issues, encourage self-reflection, and work towards fostering a more understanding and accepting community.

Asian American Student Assembly

Performing at the Asian American Student Assembly (AASA) as both a dancer and choreographer was a multifaceted journey that seamlessly blended rhythmic precision with cultural richness. In crafting the step piece and cultural fans routine, I aimed to create a performance that not only showcased the dynamic energy of step but also celebrated the diverse cultural heritage within the Asian American community.

Choreographing the step routine required meticulous attention to detail, synchronization, and collaboration with the talented team. The rhythmic stomps, claps, and body percussion were not just movements but a collective heartbeat that resonated with the audience.

Being part of AASA provided a platform not only to showcase artistic talents but also to contribute to a broader conversation about the multifaceted nature of Asian American experiences. The performance was a celebration of diversity, an acknowledgment of heritage, and a reminder of the power of the arts to bridge communities and foster a deeper understanding of cultural nuances.
